Package delivery companies are always looking for new ways to improve their bottom line. One way of doing this is to reduce the large costs of expedited shipments. Whereas the business was founded on the principle of getting it there right away at any cost whatsoever, the industry has now matured to the point where timeliness issues are largely understood and settled. This leaves corporate hierarchies free to examine ways in which to maintain schedules but at lesser costs.

As a way of reducing fuel costs, FedEx has begun experimenting with electric vehicles in trial numbers. Given the relative infancy of the technology, it only makes sense to feel the way forward slowly. Refueling issues play a critical role in establishing all-electric fleets of delivery vehicles. Conventional trucks can gas up almost anywhere, whereas new electric-powered units require more careful route planning. Battery life under all weather conditions needs to be carefully monitored under real world rather than laboratory conditions. The goal still remains absolute certainty of delivery, and the big package shippers cannot tie their fortunes to a technology that may contain hidden glitches.

With that said, however, these trials offer great hope for the future not only of the package business but for transportation methods for everyone. Once the kinks are worked out of a FedEx or UPS electric fleet, the way will be clear for the deployment of these types of vehicles for smaller operations and even individual vehicle operators.

Given the national security and environmental ramifications of ending our dependence on foreign oil, there is a lot riding on these new green trucking fleets. Of course, the possibility of increased profits through reduced maintenance and fuel costs is equally important. But it is necessary to walk before we can ride. Here’s hoping these fleets soon grow into something greater than isolated demonstration projects.
